Girl Scout cookies are coming — and who doesn’t love them? Girl Scouts from St. Paul of the Cross will be selling cookies in front of church on Saturday and Sunday, February 7–8 and February 14–15 (a perfect Valentine’s Day treat!). Traditional favorites — Thin Mints, Samoas, Lemon-Ups, Do-si-dos, Tagalongs, and Trefoils — along with the gluten-free Toffee-tastic will be available. New this year are Adventurefuls, a brownie-inspired cookie featuring caramel crème and toasted almonds. Each box sells for $6.00, with a portion of every sale supporting the Girl Scout’s troop. Thin Mints remain the most popular cookie nationwide, with Tagalongs close behind.
There are 166 registered Girl Scouts at St. Paul, from kindergarten through high school, organized into eight troops: two Daisy troops, two Brownie troops, two Junior troops, one Cadette troop, and one Senior troop. They are led by 18 leaders and assistant leaders, along with 13 additional adult volunteers. The program is coordinated by Karen Huber, Sue Siegel, and Chris Weyna.
Each troop decides how to use the proceeds from their cookie sales. Traditionally, funds support activities such as campouts, field trips to local sites of interest and learning — including botanical gardens and museums — and projects tied to the badges and religious awards the girls are earning. Last year, third-grade Brownie Troop 47442 packed meals at Feed My Starving Children, and this year they will use their funds for fishing and canoeing — “it’s all about water,” their leader says. Second-grade Troop 47784 visited Wildwood Nature Center to learn about fire safety and respecting plants and animals in their natural habitats, and this year, as part of their work toward the My Promise, My Faith Award, they collected toys for Marillac House and donated items to families in need during the holidays. As part of their religious award work, fifth-grade Troop 47726 studied the values reflected in the Girl Scout Promise, created artwork to express those values, explored quotes from women in history, and interviewed women about how those values shaped their lives and careers.
THE GIRLS SCOUT PROMISE
On my honor, I will try
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
